Dr. Geoffrey Smith provides technical support to Project Alpha in the preparation of manufacturing base reports for proliferation sensitive technologies. Dr. Smith retired in 2012, having spent 19 years working for the UK Government in the Ministry of Defence. The last 15 years of this time was spent assessing technologies for export from non/counter proliferation and export control perspectives. He was an active member of various technical expert groups attached to the export control regimes, primarily the Missile Technology Control Regime, which included the formulation of regime controls.
Dr. Smith is trained as an electrical engineer, gaining Masters and a PhD in Control Engineering. He is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He has significant engineering, software, and project experience gained with major industrial organisations including Smiths Industries, Ferranti, ICL, Vickers Design & Projects (later Halliburton/Brown & Root).
