On the 7th of November, Alpha hosted a delegation from Chinese businesses and from the Chinese Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA). At the meeting, Ian Stewart from Alpha presented on Alpha’s approach to engaging the private sector in the UK. The Chinese delegation then shared observations about their own work to implement trade controls.
Several of the Chinese businesses present had previously been “designated” by the US government for involvement in proliferation. The presence of compliance officials from these firms highlighted the efforts being made by state-owned firms in China in particular to demonstrate compliance with international obligations – an observation highlight in Alpha’s recent op-ed on ”Engaging China in Preventing Proliferation.”
The meeting builds upon broader engagement work conducted by Alpha in China, which has seen two “Industry Outreach Workshops” organised to date, with a third planned for March 2014. Alpha is also working to make other resources available to support improved implementation of trade controls within China.
